On the southeast ride of Mt. Tahira, on the Tochigi City-facing slope, Oohirasan Shrine sits. In the Tenchou Era (天長年間, 824-34 CE), it is said that Ennin himself opened this shrine, and so this place has been sacred for a long time. It is also said that it was a tradition for people to climb the mountain on the evening of the last day of Fumitsuki (文月, the 7th lunisolar month, not necessarily July), and there seclude themselves until day broke on the first day of Hazuki (葉月, the 8th lunisolar month).
Though there is now a road all the way to the top of the mountain and this shrine, there are still many people who climb the 200m of stone steps. The Honourable Sacred Cryptomeria is located immediately beside the stone steps, just below shrine gate (which is designated as a city cultural monument). This tree is the biggest tree in these here mountains.
