Unpacking, that is.  Sure, I’ve been here for two months now, but I just hadn’t gotten around to finishing the unpacking.  The bulk of the stuff still in boxes wasn’t the sort of stuff one actually uses anyway. It was decorations, books, CDs, DVDs, and so on.

I got paid Friday, and decided I’d use some of the money to buy shelves.  I kind of wanted wider shelves, especially in the living room, but none of the ones at my local home center were the right width — they were either too narrow, or too wide.  Also, the wider ones that are only like, a half again as wide are somehow 5x the price.  What? Get out.

These were 980yen each at Kanseki.

Package Things In Even Numbers

I’ll concede that I may be a bit neurotic, maybe even verging on OCD about this, but hear me out.

Things ought to be packaged in even numbers. Everything. Sponges, cookies, sandwich meat, pieces of bread, chicken nuggets, condoms. Everything ought to be packaged in even numbers.

Nothing pisses me off more than when I’m making two sandwiches, but I have seven pieces of meat and three cheese slices. What the FUCK.

And another thing! Lunch meat should NEVER HAVE A FACE. EVER.

I can abide numbers that divide evenly, even if they’re odd. Like, if you give me a package of sandwich meat, and it has 15 slices? Not optimal, but acceptable. Someone, somewhere, at some point, may be wanting to make three sandwiches with their packet of meat. It’s plausible.

But when you give me shit in PRIME FUCKING NUMBERS? Who do you fucking think you are?  What the fuck am I supposed to do with 13 slices of anything?  You’re just trying to be a troublemaker.

I could go on and complain more about how hot dog buns come in packs of five but sausages-which-are-acceptable-for-hot-dog-purposes (there are no Red Hots in Japan) come in 7, 8, or 9? NO. YOU GO DIE NOW. FUCK.

Gardening Sunday: Meet the Plants

I live in a small apartment.  It’s not a big place by any means, but it’s big enough for me. The problem is, it’s a wee bit sterile. I can’t hang anything, because I can’t put any holes in the wall, and the horrible textured wallpaper that Japan loves so much makes BluTak a reckless proposition.  So what could I do to bring some life and character into the apartment?

Houseplants.

I decided that I’d also try to chronicle my houseplant experience here, so that what I learn can be a resource for other people hoping to keep plants in their tiny apartment. Also, while there are a lot of apartment gardening resources for America in English, and they have useful, universally applicable information, for some expats, an English resource for gardening in Japan would be helpful.  “What’s this plant called?” “I need this, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what it’s called, or a brand name to reference, in Japan! HELP!”

DISCOVER Pringles Classic Salt

I don't... I don't understand the pirate theme...

My god, Pringles is turning into Kit-Kat, what with the 99999 limited editions.  This limited edition is SALT.  Salt flavoured Pringles? Aren’t those just NORMAL PRINGLES??

With this thought, I dove in.

It’s a light salt, like you’d expect from Pringles in North America, at least in the 80s and 90s.  The salt Pringles here, I find, are often too salty. These retain the potato-y goodness that ought to be at the heart of every Pringles flavour.

… but I may just be convincing myself of that to justify this expense. ._.
